When did Steveston cannery close?
Later, the cannery operated as a herring reduction plant until it closed in 1979. The site was declared a national historic site in 1976 and is now a museum presenting the history of the West Coast fishing industry, operated by the Gulf of Georgia Cannery Society on behalf of Parks Canada.

The cannery opened in 1894, in the boomtown of Steveston on the lower Fraser River. It was the largest cannery in British Columbia until 1902. It was known as the “Monster Cannery” – packing more than 2.5 million cans of salmon in 1897.
