Huge amounts of water from this sudden downpour flowed into two rivers, the Valency and Jordan (which flows into the Valency just above Boscastle). Both overflowed, and this caused a sudden rush of water to speed down the Valency – which runs through the middle of Boscastle.
Why did the River Valency flood?
The flood happened at high tide. The soils were quite thin and compiled of impermeable peat soils with become saturated very quickly, so rainfall became surface run off very quickly. The River Valency had never had a major flood before, so it was unexpected, it was a freak weather event.
