By John Johnson

What is a star chart for kids?

Star charts are a great way to improve a child’s behavior. Star charts reward desired behaviors with a star or sticker. When your child achieves the targeted behavior, he can earn a star to put on his chart, color the space or use a sticker! Many of our behavior charts can be used as star charts.

Do behavior charts work at home?

But the data overwhelmingly indicates that sticker charts DO work to help a child to change his or her behavior. Obviously, they do not work for every child, nor do they remove problematic child behavior altogether. But in general, they are effective—if you are using the correct method to implement them.

What can I use instead of a behavior chart?

Feelings Charts, cozy corners, and other types of emotionally responsive invitations are alternatives to behavioral management programs. Feelings charts give children the opportunity to think about how they feel, and to communicate those feelings to the adults in the classroom.

How do you make a reward chart?

Setting up your reward chart

  1. Choose one or a few behaviors that you want to encourage or change.
  2. Set up your chart.
  3. Choose a number of short-term rewards.
  4. Place the reward indicators right after they show the good behavior.
  5. Maintain positivity all throughout the process.
  6. Don’t stick with the chart for too long.

Are Behaviour charts a good idea?

Reward charts can be a powerful way to change children’s behaviour. You give children stickers or points towards a reward when they behave the way you want. The reward reinforces the behaviour you want. It also helps you focus on the positives in children’s behaviour.

How do you reward a child for good behavior?

Examples of Social Rewards

  1. Affection – includes hugs, kisses, a high five, a smile, a pat on the back, or an arm around the shoulder.
  2. Praise – Praise happens when parents say things like “Great job,” “Way to go,” or “Good boy/girl.” However, specific (or labeled) praise tells a child exactly what behavior you liked.

Are behavior charts bad?

Behavior charts can reinforce students who are already sociable and well behaved, but negatively affect those students who aren’t. Using charts in your classroom can affect students with a history of trauma, shame your students, and enforce strict obedience instead of actual change.
