What countries are affected by African Swine Fever?
ASF is found in countries around the world. More recently, it has spread to the Dominican Republic and Haiti. ASF has also spread through China, Mongolia and Vietnam, as well as within parts of the European Union. It has never been found in the United States – and we want to keep it that way.

When did ASF hit China?
In August 2018, ASF was detected in Shenyang in Liaoning province, China, and then spread to all mainland provinces. As of July 2019, there were a total of 162 ASF outbreaks in all parts of China. Figure 1 shows the numbers of ASF outbreaks and pig deaths during the first year of the ASF pandemic.
What province in China did the first ASF outbreak happen?
China reported its first case of ASF in northern Liaoning province on Aug. 1, 2018. It was the first instance of the disease in East Asia. Chinese farmers culled tens of thousands of pigs in response, but by the time the outbreak was discovered it was already raging out of control.
Can humans get ASF?
ASF is not a threat to human health and cannot be transmitted from pigs to humans. ASF is spread by contact with infected animals’ body fluids. It can be spread by ticks that feed on infected animals. People are also a source of spread; as they can move the virus on vehicles or clothing.

Current Situation (October 2020) The disease is also present in several countries in Eastern Europe and also in Asia where it has been found in China, Hong Kong, Mongolia , Vietnam and North Korea. In affected areas the disease has been confirmed in wild boar, as well as on farms, smallholdings and in pet pigs.
How did ASF start in the Philippines?
Initial investigation showed the ASF virus could have been transmitted to local farms in Leyte through infected boar being used for natural mating and by hog traders who might have fed their stocks with contaminated food products. In Samar Island, the ASF virus has spread through the transport of pork meat.
